The apostle Paul lamented that in his day there were “so many” who were profiteering from the Gospel, “making merchandise of the word of God.” Sadly, there are still some doing the same today — selling the Word of God for personal financial gain.
The Bible Warns Against 'Profiteering' from God's Word
2 Corinthians 2:17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit.
CSB: For we do not market the word of God for profit like so many.
CEB: We aren’t like so many people who hustle the word of God to make a profit.
GNV: …many, which make merchandise of the word of God…
NABRE: …the many who trade on the word of God…
NLT: …the many hucksters who preach for personal profit.
The Gospel is for Saving Souls, Not for Merchandising for Personal Gain.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is “the power of God for salvation” (Romans 1:16, NASB). It is not a product to be marketed or peddled for personal gain. But sadly, even in the apostle Paul’s day 20 centuries ago, there were “many” preachers and teachers making merchandise of God’s Word, peddling it and preaching it for their own profit. Sad to say, our 21st century doesn’t seem to be much different.
Historically, the Love of Money Has Led to the Downfall of Many Ministers
2 Peter 2:15 They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer, who loved the wages of wickedness.
Don't leave the straight way and follow the way of Balaam. Don't run ministry for financial profit but out of love for God and His people.
I pray God help us . Amen
